We are not stock-pickers looking to outperform the market. We don’t believe anyone has a foolproof way to determine which stocks will rise and fall – and we certainly don’t pretend to. We believe that financial markets are efficient (not perfect, but broadly so) and that the most prudent way to build your portfolio is to tailor it to match your ability, willingness and need to take risk.
Once we have finalized your financial plan and agreed on the best asset allocation to match it and meet your needs, we construct your portfolio in the lowest-cost and most tax-efficient manner possible – and then allow it to follow the market.
The first and most important step in our process is getting to know you. When it comes to investment, one size most definitely does not fit all. What works for your neighbor, or parents or co-workers may not be right for you. We work with you to really understand your personal goals, preferences and experience and to answer any questions you might have, whether you are a seasoned investor or are beginning to think about investing for the first time.
Once we know your goals, we’ll build a holistic financial plan to get you there. Your goals and situation are unique, and your plan will be too. Plan development is an iterative process. We’ll take the lead but we’ll discuss things with you as we go and make sure to answer any questions you may have. We’ll keep going until we have a plan that you are confident will achieve your goals.
We’ll implement your portfolio for you and monitor it, including re-balancing your portfolio to ensure that your asset allocation remains in line as the market changes. We’ll also provide periodic check-ups and reminders e.g. to open or fund an IRA, fund your 401k, open a 529, or sell some of your concentrated company stock position. Because we know you and your goals, we can make sure to ask the right questions at the right time, not bombard you with generic advice.
We will intelligently manage the location of assets to minimize the tax impact. Where possible, we also use tax-loss harvesting in order to help you offset the taxes on investment gains. And if we can reduce costs in your portfolio we will.

Investors who work with an advisor tend to fare better. Advisors help to make sure your assets are invested appropriately, encourage the right long-term behavior, implement the best asset allocation strategy, keep costs down, and monitor and rebalance your portfolio. While a typical advisor fee is about 1%, a Vanguard study shows that working with an advisor can add about 3% in net returns each year. Learn more
